Do you vary the ways that you load your body with different modalities of similar movements? Do you always put the bar on your back for lunges? Always hold dumbbells? Use only a sandbag? Hold plates? Switching up the way you apply external load to your body as you do various movements can not only slightly alter how you target the main muscle groups, but also to what extent assisting muscles are being targeted.
